Kenyan tourism association urges vigilance after weekend attack
Tuesday, 08 November 2011
A tour guide/driver was shot dead on an access road to the Shaba National Reserve in Kenya over the weekend. Two clients were on board, one of whom sustained bullet wounds.

In a statement issued by KATO (the Kenya Association of Tour Operators), CEO Fred Kaigua, said: “The matter is being investigated to determine whether this was a random attack on a tour vehicle or part of the on-going conflict afflicting the area.  In the meantime, there is concern over the possible effects on tourism to the region and safety of visitors in general.”

He advised tour operators to be aware that there has been ongoing conflict in the region centring around cattle rustling and ethnic conflict. “Although the conflict is believed to be mainly among locals, the risk to tourism cannot be ignored. Recent escalation of the conflict has seen reprisal attacks that led to the blocking of the main road to the reserves.”

KATO emphasised that an advisory to avoid the area was not being issued at this stage but tour operators should be mindful of the current situation and take extra precautions and reconfirm with booked properties about the prevailing situation on the ground.
