Kenya travel advisory
Monday, 28 January 2008

The UK Foreign Office has relaxed its ban on non-essential travel to Kenya, declaring the country safe for travel but still advising tourists to keep clear of certain areas with a warning that the security and political situation "remains unpredictable".

This comes after a week of relative calm across Kenya following the spate of violent clashes between opposition party supporters and police two weeks ago (TIR 360° e-News, January 21).

It is hoped the UK's relaxation of its travel advisory will be seen as a signal that tourism to Kenya is viable so that the country can begin to recoup some of the US$45-million in tourism revenue it is estimated has been lost since violence erupted over the disputed December 27 election.

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) is still posting regular updates on the situation on its website. The most recent posting reported no problems in any of the wildlife parks, calm in Mombassa and all tourist routes open for traffic as normal.

"Once again there have been no reports of any problems affecting tourists staying in Nairobi hotels, beach resorts, on safari or transferring between airports and hotels," the KTB reported.

Minor incidents of unrest have broken out sporadically over the past week, but these incidents have been confined to Nairobi's slums and areas of western Kenya that are not often visited by tourists.
