Floods hit southern Thailand, Red Shirts return
Tuesday, 11 January 2011

FRESH floods have swamped Thailand's southern provinces following six days of torrential rain. Thousands of people have been affected by the flooding and hundreds of villagers have been evacuated to temporary shelters as the floods spread to the four provinces of Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani and Narathiwat, cutting off many roads.

Officials say floods have affected around 40 000 villagers in one province alone. The recent floods come just one month after flooding that claimed the lives of nearly 200 people in the country.

Meanwhile Thailand's red-shirted anti-government protesters returned to the streets of Bangkok on Sunday for their first demonstration since the state of emergency was lifted last month.

Police said up to 30 000 opposition supporters had descended on the area they had occupied during the height of the protests last year, and had demanded a thorough investigation of a deadly government crackdown in May, along with the release of protest leaders, some of whom have been held in jail on terrorism charges for months.

Although Sunday's demonstration was largely peaceful, Red Shirt organisers said they planned to hold regular demonstrations twice a month until their demands were met.
