Sisonke steams ahead with Signature Life Hotels

Signature Life Hotels’ latest project, the Sisonke steam train, gives passengers a chance to discover the natural beauty, history and culture of the southern Drakensberg.

The Sisonke Stimela is a fully restored steam train that offers a choice of trips through the southern KwaZulu Natal Midlands and Drakensberg. Alan Vels, Managing Director of Signature Life Hotels says: “This is a dream project for us. It is a combined effort to promote tourism in the region by the municipalities of the area to position our province as a destination for local and international travellers.”

The train will appeal to travellers with interests ranging from eco-tourism, birding and nature, to historical mission visits, and business occasions. The accommodation on board consists of 21 air-conditioned suites that were originally fitted by Rovos Rail. Each wood-panelled suite accommodates two passengers, and are furnished in Edwardian style, with bathroom and shower.

The 42-seater dining coach has a menu can be customised to suit various occasions and there is both a lounge and club coach. The train can be used for corporate functions as it has a fully equipped conference carriage that can accommodate up to 40 delegates.
