Construction of new OR Tambo airport hotel under way
Monday, 26 January 2009

Work began on January 12 on a 305-room City Lodge hotel at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport with completion scheduled for April 2010.

By far the biggest hotel in the JSE-listed City Lodge Hotels group, it is being constructed above the major new car park at the airport.

The hotel is being developed as part of a tender awarded to City Lodge Hotels last year by Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) to establish three new hotels at OR Tambo, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein airports.

All three hotels – which will cost around R290 million to develop – are subject to a long-term land and building lease agreement between City Lodge Hotels and Acsa.

Construction of the 90-room Road Lodge Port Elizabeth Airport and the 68-room Road Lodge Bloemfontein Airport is expected to begin once regulatory approvals have been finalised.

“This is an exciting new growth phase for our group and we are looking forward to providing hotel accommodation for both business and leisure travellers at these three important airports,” said Clifford Ross, chief executive of the City Lodge Hotels group.
