Killer virus remains unidentified
Wednesday, 08 October 2008

The mystery viral fever, which has killed four people in South Africa after a patient was rushed to hospital from Zambia with suspected tick bite fever, is still being investigated.

Blood tests are being conducted and despite suspicions that this may be of a type of haemorrhagic fever, nothing has yet been confirmed. The Zambian patient, her medical escort to South Africa, a nurse and a cleaner at the Johannesburg hospital where she was treated have all died after displaying similar symptoms, which include high fever, nausea, diarrhoea, aching muscles and bleeding.

At present, there have been no travel advisories issued against travel to Zambia, although anyone who has recently travelled to the country and is displaying the symptoms mentioned above should undergo an immediate medical examination.
