Gov pumps R100 million into domestic tourism
Friday, 29 August 2014
Government has allocated R100 million to boost SA Tourism’s domestic tourism marketing efforts for the 2015/16 financial year, tourism minister Derek Hanekom has announced.

Speaking at the launch of Tourism Month at the Maboneng Precinct on Tuesday, he said 2013’s domestic tourism figures were flat compared to the previous year. “In total, 12 million domestic tourists took 25,1 million trips in 2013.” He added that the domestic market, unlike international arrivals, has remained under pressure since the global financial crisis. “This can be ascribed to the continued pressure on South African consumers given the slower growth of the national economy.”

However, the minister also pointed out that domestic tourism’s contribution had increased to R24,3 billion last year, compared to R21,8 in 2012.

“To reach our target of 18 million domestic tourists by 2020, as set out in the National Tourism Sector Strategy, we will have to work hard to ensure that tourism is more affordable and more accessible to all South Africans,” he said.

The marketing efforts that the funding will go towards will include the continued rollout of the ‘Nothing’s More Fun than a Sho’t Left’ campaign.

“We are very excited by the market’s reaction to this campaign to date,” said Derek.  “One way of reviewing it is to look at the activity on the Sho’t Left website since the campaign launch.” He said the website has received over 200 000 visits and showed a 25% return rate, with an average stay of almost six minutes to the site.
