South Africa has been ranked as having the cheapest transport fares out of 51 countries globally. For air travel, SA came in third-cheapest after India and Malaysia, which were ranked first and second. 

This is according to GoEuro, a website that compares and combines the cost of transport to present the worldwide Transportation Price Index for 51 countries across five continents. 

Taking into account factors such as distance, scheduling and taxes, GoEuro compared the cheapest bus, train and flight connections between the most populous cities. 

Countries were rated according to average price per 100km for each transportation type.

Findings showed that South Africa was the cheapest country for transport overall, where an average bus journey costs US$3,67/100km (R41); an average train journey is $1,88/100km (R20); and a flight is $11,63/100km (R124). 

The most expensive country for transport is Switzerland, where bus journeys cost on average $18,67/100km (R199); train journeys $38,28/100km (R408); and flights $125,07/100km (R1 334)

The cheapest countries for air travel are India at $10,36/100km (R111) and Malaysia at $11,43/100km (R122), while the most expensive are Finland at $138.90/100km (R1481), and Switzerland and Lithuania at $116,72/100km (R1 245).

The cheapest countries for train travel are South Africa, Georgia and Egypt, while the most expensive are Denmark, Switzerland and Austria.

The cheapest countries for bus travel are Egypt, Ukraine and Thailand, while the most expensive are Netherlands, Austria and Norway.
