New regulations discourage family travel
Monday, 09 June 2014
New SA regulations aimed at fighting child trafficking are expected to discourage family travel.

Parents arriving and departing from SA with children are required to produce an unabridged birth certificate for any children. In the case where only one parent is travelling with the child(ren), consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent registered is required. Alternatively, either a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or a death certificate of the other parent must be produced.

Under the regulations, which came into effect at the beginning of the month as part of the new Immigration Amendment Act, people travelling to SA on a visa are now required to apply for the visa in person.

At the time of publication, the Department of Home Affairs had not responded to numerous requests for comment.
