Tourvest takes to the Nile
Wednesday, 25 September 2013
Tourvest has acquired a controlling interest in the Ugandan-based Nile rafting company, Adrift, in a move to support its Accommodation and Activities division’s expansion outside South Africa.

Tourvest divisional chief executive, Gary Elmes, said the company already had a small footprint in Uganda through its overland safari business, Drifters.

“Through the purchase we have also acquired the majority share in the unique Wild Waters Lodge, situated on an island in the Nile surrounded by the Kalagala Falls.  We have also secured concessions to build lodges in or near most of the national parks, including Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and the Kasinga Channel, as part of the acquisition.”

Gary said the Adrift acquisition was another step in the implementation of the company’s strategy of establishing a mini-Tourvest in East Africa and that it added an activity-based dimension to a growing range of tourism businesses and accommodation in the area.  These include Vintage Africa, Tourvest’s Kenyan based tour operator, ground-handler and travel agent, and Lemala and Kuria Hills, the seasonal and permanent camps it operates in the Serengeti National Park.  Additionally, Tourvest’s property management business, AHA, was recently awarded the full management contracts for the Mara River Lodge in Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the Azanzi Beach Hotel in Zanzibar.

Other activities available through Adrift include bungee jumping, jet boating and river surfing on the Lake Victoria source of the Nile near Bujagali Falls in Jinja.
