Tourvest offers domestic tourism with a twist

Tourvest Destination Management has launched a new company that focuses on “unique” domestic tourism experiences for South Africans.

Handpicked Experiences offers lifestyle, sport and wildlife experiences that give access to people, places and activities not generally available to the public, says gm, Derick Oosthuizen. “This may be access to a place or activity not usually open to tourists or the opportunity to experience a lifestyle or sports event with a person who adds unique value, be it a celebrated winemaker, renowned chef or Springbok rugby player.”

The company will offer both domestic and international packages but with the focus specifically on experiences already available in South Africa. “Unlike international arrivals, domestic tourism in South Africa has not recovered since the 2008/2009 economic downturn. We believe that it is time for a new approach, one that puts South Africa’s amazing people and its incredible lifestyle offering at the centre of our domestic marketing efforts,” says Martin Wiest, ceo of Tourvest Destination Management.

The company believes the products will be popular with both the leisure market and with corporate clients looking for new and interesting incentive trips for their staff and clients. Trips will host between 12 and 24 people. “It’s ideal for corporates as a company can book out the whole trip for their staff or clients,” Derick says.

For example, rugby fans can buy an all-inclusive package for the Springbok test against Australia, with a braai at Schalk Burger & Sons Welbedacht wine estate in Wellington ahead of the game. The package to watch the Springboks play in France later this year has former Springbok coach, Nick Mallet, on board to share his unique insight with the group.
