Mobile phone calls on Emirates
Thursday, 27 March 2008

On March 20, Emirates became the first airline to launch an in-flight mobile telephone service.

The first call was made en-route to Casablanca, on board an A340-300 – the first in the airline’s fleet to be equipped with the AeroMobile system. It will cost about R218m to fit out its fleet with the system.

The new service will be activated only once the aircraft reaches cruising altitude and cabin crew have full control over the system. Only five to six calls will be permitted at a time and passengers will also be able to send and receive text messages. Call and text charges will be in line with premium international roaming rates.
