Increased airport charges for London
Tuesday, 25 March 2008

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has increased airport charges at Heathrow and Gatwick by over 20% despite its original proposal to cap increases at 15,6% at Heathrow and 8,2% at Gatwick.

Last year, the CAA proposed that the maximum charge per passenger at Heathrow would be £11,97 (R194) in 2008/09, but has instead increased this to £12,80 (R207), a 23,5% increase from 2007/08.

Gatwick’s charge, proposed to be a maximum of £6,07 (R98), is instead £6,79 (R110), a 21% increase from 2007/08.

According to the CAA, this is due to the additional investment at Heathrow and the additional security costs at both airports.

The CAA released a statement saying: “The CAA recognises that the resulting increases in airport charges are significant. However, these higher airport charges are essentially paying for the modernisation of Heathrow and Gatwick, in terms of both facilities and service, for the direct benefit of the passenger.”
